The “ROCKWALL”
A Sculptural Surround for Vertical Access
-
The "Rockwall"
The "Rockwall" is a three-dimensional sculptural wall surround created specifically for the homeowners’ circular glass elevator. The “Rockwall” integrates both technology and whimsy into its functionality and is comprised of four separate radii and corresponding elevations, which are visible from adjoining architectural spaces. The main structure of the surround is constructed of welded 3/8" steel plate cut to various radii. Hundreds of small segmented I-Beams provide the support between the steel plate rows which also are the connection points for the sandblasted polycarbonate panels. The steel rows are piled with rocks from a local quarry and backlit to create a reflective shadow on the panels. As the glass elevator travels through the core of the space, its passage evokes a geological odyssey.
